About me
Birger graduated from the National Film & Television School in 2006, with an MA in Composing for Film & Television. Before coming to the UK, he studied music at Freiburg’s Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in his native Germany. He was also selected from over 300 applicants, as one of only twelve participants of the highly regarded ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop, held in Los Angeles in July 2007.
His recent work includes German feature film Echo of Tomorrow’s War, Netflix drama series Sunshine Eyes, feature film The Reckoning of Erin Morrigan by fellow NFTS graduate Gabrielle Russell and a feature-length documentary 9/11:Life Under Attack for itv, for which he was Emmy-nominated. The film was also nominated for an RTS Programme Award 2022.
Other projects include Jan Krüger’s feature films Die Geschwister (Brother&Sister) and Auf der Suche (Looking for Simon), which screened at the Berlinale 2011, Alexandra McGuinness’ feature film Lotus Eaters (Tribeca Film Festival among others), starring Alexandra Campbell- Hughes (Under The Skin), two-part BBC2 documentary The Real White Queen and Her Rivals, presented by bestselling author Philippa Gregory, and HBO documentary Americans in Bed. His music for feature film The Last Thakur was awarded Best Film Score at the South Asian International Film Festival New York / SAIFF, and he has been nominated for Best Original Score for his work on Sky HD’s Meerkats 3D. Other tv documentaries include Channel 5’s I Survived a Fatal Flight and Philippa Robinson’s Wonderland documentary A Very British Holiday for BBC2. His music for all three series of Animal Planet’s international hit series Fatal Attractions has been an integral part of the programme’s success.
In Germany, he worked on further arthouse feature films and award-winning prime time tv dramas, including the cult long-time series of standalone thriller movies, Tatort. Birger lives in Berlin and is represented by BDI Music Ltd., London.
He is a member of the European Film Academy and the German Film Academy.
